The 5 Natural Parks of Alava, 5 Basque treasures to discover<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In this article we will take a walk through the five natural parks in the province of Alava, Basque Country. Several of them share territory with other Basque provinces, as is the case of the natural parks of Azkorri, Gorbea and Urkiola. Azkorri Natural Park<\/strong>, this park also known as Azkorri-Aratz Natural Park is located north of the province of Alava and south of the province of Guipuzcoa, as you can see, this natural park gives us the opportunity to enjoy two Basque provinces with different profiles but with the same culture and tradition of mountaineering. The Azkorri Natural Park covers an area of approximately 19,500 hectares divided between the provinces of Gipuzkoa and Alava. The park is named after its highest peak, Mount Azkorri, although it also has peaks of great tradition among Basque mountaineers, a clear example of which is Mount Txindoki. From either of the two summits we mentioned we have stunning views over the lands surrounding the park, lands of which we highlight the beech forests and more than 20 species of local fauna protected by European legislation. <\/p>\n

\"Aizkorri<\/a>

Aizkorri Natural Park<\/p><\/div>\n

Natural park of izki<\/strong>, this park, located in the southeast of Alava was declared a natural park in 1998. The park is located in the quadrilateral of the Alava mountain and with a total of 9,100 hectares we can classify it as one of the largest in the province of Alava. The highest peak of this park is the Kapildui mountain, without a doubt, this park is an ideal place for mountaineering and hiking. Among all the views that we can appreciate in the natural park of izki we highlight the wonderful views of the cliff Bujanda to Korres. Its vegetation is dominated by lush forests among which are oak, oak and birch. <\/p>\n

izki Natural Park<\/p><\/div>\n

Gorbea Natural Park<\/strong>, is the largest natural park in the Basque Country, is located between the provinces of Alava and Bizkaia, its area is around 20,000 hectares and was declared a Natural Park in 1994. In this natural park as well as in those previously mentioned we can carry out many active tourism activities, a clear example of this are the numerous routes available in the gorbea natural park, perfect for hiking or MTB (mountain biking). The park has a recreational area called parketxea, in Spanish we could translate it as Interpretation Center, although it really means “the house of the park”. In this park we can enjoy spaces such as the ojo de atxalaur and supelegor, two spaces with a lot of history and tradition. <\/p>\n

\"Gorbea<\/a>

Gorbea Natural Park<\/p><\/div>\n

Urkiola Natural Park:<\/strong> This park covers an area of about 5,768 hectares and occupies part of Alava and Vizcaya, so access can be made from different areas of both provinces, the easiest access being the regional road N-623 that connects Durango with Vitoria Gasteiz. This road has a special charm because it crosses the park from north to south. The Urkiola Natural Park was declared a natural park in December 1989 with the aim of guaranteeing its conservation and protection. <\/p>\n

Among its fauna we can find up to 137 species that live among the bushes, streams and fountains, protected at all times from human danger, although at the end of the 19th century there were species that could not adapt to the change in the climate. The vegetation of Urkiola Park is made up of numerous forests of all kinds. The flora of this place is very varied and there are about 700 species. As for the fauna, we must mention the roe deer, a species that is in full expansion process in the Urkiola Natural Park. An ideal and unique place to practice sports such as climbing, a sport with a large number of fans in the Basque Country, all kinds of routes will open before you waiting for you to climb them, are you up for it? The tokialai Interpretation Center is located at the foot of Mount Saibi, where you can enjoy its permanent exhibition and audiovisuals. <\/p>\n

\"Urkiola<\/a>

Urkiola Natural Park<\/p><\/div>\n

Valderejo Natural Park<\/strong>, this park is located west of the province of Alava is well known for its oak forests, in fact, its name Valderejo <\/strong>refers to oak forests, if we separate its name we will find 3 words Val-de-Aretzo<\/em>, aretzo in Basque means oak forest, so we can derive that its name comes from “valley of Aretzo”. This park has the largest community of griffon vultures in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country, a species that is scarce in the Basque fauna. It was declared a natural park in 1992 and although it has only about 3,500 hectares, it has innumerable jewels inside. For any questions or information about the different trails that make up the park you can stop by the park house where they will inform you of everything you need. <\/p>\n

Valderejo Natural Park<\/p><\/div>\n

As you can see, 5 scenarios full of nature, nature that awaits your arrival with open arms. We recommend visiting these natural parks at all times of the year, getting the best of each season.
