A brief summary on the beginning of the history of the Basques<\/h2>\n

The history of the Basques is curious to say the least, since towns that are not now part of the Basque Country were once part of it, or at least were allied with what today are the provinces of the Basque Country.<\/p>\n

We are going to tell you the beginning of the history of the Basques.<\/b><\/p>\n

The Basque people were not what we understand today as the Basque Country, it all began in Navarre, the Navarrese were the first Basques, since the Greco-Roman geologists baptized Navarre with the name of Vasconia and with the term Vascones to its inhabitants. In fact we can say that the name of Navarre in Basque, Nafarroa, comes from Nabarra, a word that in medieval Basque meant “plain near the mountains”. The Basque language or what we know today as Euskera or Basque in its day was called “lingua navarrum” so that we can see the importance that this province had in the culture and being of the Basque people, a fundamental pillar in the history of the Basques. <\/p>\n

There are many Navarrese who defend their idea of belonging to the Basque people, as did the popular Basque sportsman and actor I\u00f1aki Perurena in an interview he gave in his stone museum<\/a> in Leitza, the video is curious to say the least, we recommend watching it if only to see the spirit with which I\u00f1aki Perurena tells the story of the Basques and Navarre.<\/p>\n

The Basque people are the only people to survive the Roman conquest, and many historians indicate that the Basque culture is descended from what was the Franco-Cantabrian civilization (prehistoric civilization).<\/p>\n

Now, you may be thinking how the Basque Country, Biscay, Gipuzkoa and Araba could have ended up being the Basque Country if at the beginning it was only Navarre, because the explanation is simple, the Navarrese were the leaders of several tribes against the Germans, and this union of tribes can be called the Basque people, or what we know today as the Basque Country. At this time in which Navarre led the other Basque tribes, the Basque people spread to what is now known as the French Basque country and part of the Pyrenees. <\/p>\n

People who were unaware of this part of the history of the Basques will be pensive, perhaps thinking how small the world is and the twists and turns it can take.<\/p>\n
